Newspaper Archives
The museum’s newspaper archive contains original newspapers dating from the mid-1890s to the present day. The early newspapers are fragile. Microfilm, or in some cases, photocopies of the originals, are made available to researchers. The archive also houses microfilm of some early newspapers for which we do not have original copies.
The East Bonner County Library District also offers several local newspapers in digital format, dating back to 1940, including the Bonner County Daily Bee, the Sandpoint Daily Bee, the Sandpoint News-Bulletin, and the Lewis County Herald.
Below is a partial inventory of newspapers in the Museum’s collection. Please note that this is not a complete inventory. Links to indexes are being added on a regular basis.
Newport Miner / Gem State Miner
Serving Pend Oreille and West Bonner Counties from 1897 to today.
Sandpoint Newspapers
Newspapers came and went over a long period of time in Bonner County. There were years of bitter competition among editors-years that resembled the biting language of the Tombstone Epitaph of Tombstone, Arizona. It was a time when men differed in their views and did not hesitate in renouncing the views of a competing editor. It was a time before people preyed on every written word in order to scream “libel” or “slander.” It was a good time.
The Clark’s Fork Times
The Clark’s Fork Times was published in Clark Fork, Idaho from 1912 through 1914.
The River Journal
First published in 1993, the River Journal serves Heron, Noxon, and Trout Creek, MT and Hope and Clark Fork, Idaho today.
